Let me go ahead and preface this by saying that Lil Skies, Jay Critch, Rich the Kid, 6ix9ine, Juice WRLD or Lil Baby will not be included because of denying the cover or blowing up too quickly, even though I think all of those rappers should have been on it.
The long awaited 2018 XXL Freshman Cover issue finally dropped… and I, just like many others, am extremely disappointed in it. Not only did it include some terrible choices, but it left out a lot of artists who should have been on it. So without further ado, here is 5 artists that I believe should have been on the cover.
Yung Bans has definitely blown up this year, especially from the start of 2018 to now. His popularity most notably came along when he collaborated on the song “Lonely” with Lil Skies, which got put on to many playlists and put his name on the map. Since then, he has collaborated with bigger artists such as Lil Yachty and even Future. Yung Bans is what the definition of a XXL “Freshman” should be and deserves to be on the cover this year.
I know, I know… a lot of you hate Lil Xan. But me and my roommates in college fell in love with his music and he sort of became a meme, so I really had a lot of trust he would make the list. Sure, his new album, Total Xanarchy wasn’t good at all, but you cannot deny that he has had numerous hits the past year, specifically “Betrayed” “Slingshot” and “Far”. His rise has been throughout the entire past year and I guarantee you most people have heard of him
Jaden has grown way past his stereotyping of conspiratorial thoughts and being the shadow of his father. If you haven’t listened to his album that dropped last November, SYRE, then you are absolutely missing out. His musical ability is astonishing and he has been working at it for a long time. He also has two new albums coming out this year so being a 2018 XXL Freshman would have been a perfect fit.
Joyner Lucas has probably been the fastest growing artist this year and argeuably one of the most lyrical as well. His song on YouTube “I’m Not Racist” went insanely viral, and most of his songs have crazy music videos to go along with them, resulting in high views and exposure. He has also collaborated with Chris Brown and other huge names while displaying his rapping talent. Although he came at Logic for no reason about his wife right after their divorce which is super petty, I think he deserves to be on the cover.
This man should have easily been on this cover last year and even more so this year, so I was very lost when he didn’t make the cut. Simply put, he just makes great music and I don’t think many people can deny that, especially since he peaked at 10 on the Billboard 200. He also proved that he wasn’t just a one hit wonder with his new album Activated releasing last month which had a ton of popular features. I really thought it was a given that Tee Grizzley would have been on the cover.
